GeoMaX Presentations at EMPG Meeting at ETH Zürich

Almost the entire GeoMaX research group was attending the Experimental Mineralogy and Petrology (EMPG) Meeting at ETH Zürich. The following presentations about the work of the GeoMaX group were given.

„Experimental high-pressure/high-temperature deformation of lower mantle materials at DESY“ (Talk by Hauke Marquardt)

„Direct quantification of the effect of Fe and OH on the HP/HT single-crystal elasticity of ringwoodite“ (Talk by Kirsten Schulze)

„Cation substitution in MgSiO3 bridgmanite: implication for the mineralogy of the Earth’s lower mantle“ (Keynote talk by Tiziana Boffa Ballaran)

„Internally consistent high-pressure single-crystal elasticity of (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 wadsleyite“ (Poster presentation by Johannes Buchen)

Invited talk at EGU meeting in Vienna

Hauke was invited to present the group’s work in a talk about „Composition and Structure of Earth’s Lower Mantle from Elasticity and Rheology Measurements“ at the meeting of the European Geophysical Union (EGU) in Vienna. The talk was scheduled in the session „Understanding The Earth’s mantle: interdisciplinary approach“, which attracted a very interdisciplinary audience, including geodynamicists, seismologists, geochemists and mineral physicists.

GeoMaX group members at AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco

Alex presented some recent results on the single-crystal elasticity of Al-Fe-bearing bridgmanite at the AGU Conference in San Francisco. Hauke showed an overview of the group’s activities with a focus on the oppurtunities for experimental high-pressure elasticity studies arising from the use of the focused ion beam sample preparation technique. Hauke also organized an interdisciplinary session about „Slabs in Earth’s Mantle“ together with S. Jacobsen (Nothwestern University), Margarete Jadamec (University of Houston), and Maureen Long (Yale University).

Talks, Posters and Session at the GeoBerlin 2015 Meeting

Almost all GeoMaX group members attended the GeoBerlin Meeting „Dynamic Earth“ that was held at the Free University in Berlin from October 4th-7th.

Johannes and Kirsten talked about their recent work on the „Elastic anisotropy of wadsleyite“ and „The effect of iron content and hydration on the high-pressure single-crystal elasticity of ringwoodite derived from an internally consistent approach“, respectively in the session „A4-03 Properties of Earth Materials and Constraints on Mantle Flow“ (Hauke Marquardt, Robert Farla, Patrick Cordier).

Hauke presented work on „Deformation of (Mg,Fe)O ferropericlase at high-pressures and high-temperatures and slab stagnation in the shallow lower mantle“ and a follow-up study on „The response of subducting slabs to a strength increase in the shallow lower constrained by numerical modelling“. In addition, Alex showed a poster about „The effect of iron and aluminium incorporation on the single-crystal elasticity of bridgmanite at high pressure“.

Invited Talk at IUCr Workshop in Brazil

Hauke was invited to talk about „Internally consistent elasticity measurements of FIB-prepared single-crystals at high-pressures and high-temperatures by Brillouin spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction“ at the workshop of the International Union for Crystallography (IUCr) which took place at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) from September 12th-15th.

Invited Talk at Goldschmidt Conference

Hauke was invited to present some of the group research at this year’s Goldschmidt Conference in Praque. The talk entitled „Strength of (Mg, Fe)O Ferropericlase at High-Pressures and High-Temperatures and Slab Stagnation in the Shallow Lower Mantle“ was schedule in session 25d „Physics and Chemistry of Earth Materials – Insights from Simulations and Experiments“.

Presentations of GeoMax group members at Goldschmidt Conference

Almost the entire GeoMaX research group was attending the Goldschmidt Conference in Praque.

Alexander gave a talk about „Single-Crystal Elastic Properties of Mg0.88Fe0.12Si0.09Al0.11O3 Bridgmanite at High Pressure“.

Johannes and Kirsten (both PhD students) presented Brillouin scattering and XRD results on posters entitled „Internally Consistent High-Pressure Elasticity of Single-Crystal (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 Wadsleyite“ and „Direct Quantification of the Effects of Iron Content and Hydration on the High-Pressure Elasticity of Single-Crystal Ringwoodite“, respectively.
